Harry Holmes was one of six players who defected from the Toronto Blueshirts of the NHA in 1915 to come out west and join the new Seattle Metropolitans of the PCHA. He already had three seasons as a pro under his belt, including a Stanley Cup championship with Toronto in 1914.

Holmes was consistently one of the top goaltenders in the PCHA, helping to lead the Mets to a Stanley Cup in 1917. The following season (1917-18) he was loaned to the Toronto Arenas of the NHL, winning his second consecutive Stanley Cup with that club. He returned to Seattle for the 1918-19 season, and took Seattle to the Cup finals in the next two seasons (one series ended in a tie, the other was lost), making him one of the only goalies in history to start in four consecutive Stanley Cup finals series.

Holmes led the PCHA in GAA five times and in wins and shutouts four times. His record in Stanley Cup finals play with the Mets was 7-6-1, which is excellent considering the caliber of the opposition in those games. He played in every minute of every game during his tenure in Seattle, an astounding accomplishment considering that he played his entire career without a protective mask.

Following his eight seasons in Seattle, Holmes took the Victoria Cougars to back-to-back Stanley Cup finals appearances, winning the Cup for a fourth time in 1925. He finished his career with the Detroit Cougars of the NHL from 1926-28.
